What we do

Reading Tutoring

The New Jersey Black Literacy Alliance offers reading assessments and personalized tutoring for adults, middle school students, and elementary students in grades 3–5. Assessments help identify each learner’s strengths and areas for growth, including reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and foundational skills. Tutors use the results to create supportive, culturally affirming instruction tailored to each learner’s goals and pace.

Literacy advocacy

Literacy advocacy promotes access to reading, writing, and learning for people of all ages. Advocates support strong libraries, inclusive books, and education programs that help people build essential skills and take part more fully in their communities. By partnering with other advocacy organizations, NJBLA will increase awareness with

Book Drives/Little Library project

Little free libraries improve neighborhoods by making books freely accessible to everyone without cards, fees, or due dates. These miniature book-sharing boxes promote literacy, encourage a lifelong love of reading, and support sustainable resource sharing by giving used books a new home. Operating on a simple "take a book, share a book" model, they also foster a sense of generosity and help neighbors connect with one another through shared literary discoveries.
